Peer Support Scheme now open for applications

fancy a chatThe SUSU Peer Support Scheme is a confidential listening service delivered for students, by students. Applications are now open for you to become a trained Peer Supporter for your Students’ Union.

The Peer Supporters are a trained group of volunteering students, ranging from first years to postgraduates. They attend regular supervision and receive extensive training from a therapist so that they are able to provide informal opportunities for students to discuss any issues that they may have.

The deadline for applications this year will be Friday 25 September.  Interviews will take place on the 29 and 30 of September.

Training to become a Peer Supporter involves 10 two and a half hour sessions provided by a qualified therapist. The skills developed through the training include effective listening and maintaining confidentiality, with emphasis placed on the listener learning their limits and recognising when it is best to refer the person they are supporting to another service.

Following their training, Peer Supporters must then commit to a minimum of five hours a week, for at least two terms.

If you would like to get involved with the Peer Support Scheme, fill out this application and email it to [email protected] by Friday 25 September.

Keep up with Peer Support on Facebook and Twitter.
