Getting to know campus – Part 1: Shops on Highfield campus

Whilst there are many shops around the city of Southampton where you can buy everything that you’ll need as a student, there are also shops on campus to save yourself a journey. Here’s your go-to guide to shopping on campus: where sells what, and when everything is open.

The SUSU shop
The Students’ Union shop

The Students’ Union Shop

The Students’ Union shop is your staple shop on Highfield campus. It will provide you with sustenance for your long hours at the Hartley library, as well as offering groceries, toiletries, magazines, and stationary. It always has an interesting playlist going on too. Term-time opening hours: Monday-Friday 08:00-19:00, Saturday 10:00-16:00 and Sunday 11:00-15:30.

The Shop On Top

The Shop On Top is the newest addition to Highfield Campus. It expands the content found in the Students’ Union shop, with University branded clothing, gifts and stationary, and more space for browsing items. Term-time opening hours: Monday-Friday 09:30-15:30.

John Smith’s

John Smith’s is your go-to place for stationary and course books, situated on the intersection between University Road and Burgess Road. They handily lay out books by modules for your ease of browsing, as well as stocking lots of other bits and bobs – from laptops to backpacks to sweets. Term-time opening hours: Monday-Friday 09:00-17:30.

The SUSU Market
The SU Market

SU Market

Every Monday during term time, a market comes to the Students’ Union redbrick with fresh local goods. It includes the Fruit and Veg sale, Muffin Lady, New Forest Butchers, Artemis Olive and Riviera Bread. Don’t be lulled into thinking that it’s too expensive for a student budget- you might find that it’s cheaper than shopping for your food in a supermarket. Opening times: Monday 09:00-17:00.
