Getting to know campus – Part 2: Food and drink

Food is a key necessity for making it through lectures on a daily basis. Whether it’s just a quick coffee you fancy, or a hearty meal so that you don’t have to cook or wash up, the University’s campuses have everything, whatever campus you’re on.

The Bridge

The Bridge is located in the Students’ Union, and functions as both a bar and restaurant, facilitating a wide variety of events – for example Sunday’s Carvery and Quiz & Curry. With plug sockets aplenty, it’s a nice quiet space to do work over coffee. Opening times: Monday-Friday 09:00-00:00, Saturday-Sunday 11:30-23:00.

The Stags

Not only is The Stags the home of cheap alcohol on campus, but it has a lot more to offer. The Stags has a range of spirits, draughts, and bottles, offering 2 for 1 pizza on a Sunday (or a mere £5.50 a pizza any other day), hot dogs, and £1.50 toasties. It’s the go-to place for live sports and karaoke on a Thursday. Where can you go wrong with that? Opening times: Monday-Wednesday 11:30-00:00, Thursday 11:30-01:00, Friday-Saturday 11:30-00:00 and Sunday 11:30-23:30.

The Café

The Café has the longest food related opening times on campus. It’s great for a pre-lecture breakfast, with a free tea or coffee with your 7 or 10 item breakfast, and it also has hearty meals to offer you throughout the day- from jacket potatoes to lasagne. A range of cold salads and sandwiches are available too. Opening times: Monday-Friday 08:00-18:00, Saturday 11:00-15:00.

The Bar Three Diner

At just a year old, Bar Three Diner is the newest food place in the Students’ Union. With an American diner feel, it offers a choice of burgers with film-inspired names (take ‘Stack To The Future’ for example), chicken, shakes and ice cream at a reasonable price.

The diner also hosts ‘The Braveheart Challenge’, giving the brave just 15 minutes to devour a 14” baguette topped with chilli, chips, and salad. If you win, you get your money back- so it’s definitely worth a go. Opening times: Monday-Friday 11:30-17:00.

Piazza

Piazza is probably the busiest lunch place on campus. It has a Starbucks kiosk embedded within it and offers a similar range of food to The Café. With cold and hot food, it’s a great place to go between lectures. It has a lot of seating space as well, so you can even do a spot of work there.

Costa

The newest addition to campus is the Costa, situated next to John Smith’s and the campus banks. Offering high levels of caffeine to get you through your studies and a range of food, it’s also quite a quiet spot to do some work if you don’t fancy the library. Opening times: Monday-Friday 07:00-19:30, Saturday 07:00-18:00, Sunday 09:00-17:00.

Lattes

There are numerous Lattes across our campuses, including at the NOC and Avenue, offering coffee, hot food, and a select range of sandwiches and salads to keep Humanities students going throughout the day. Opening times: Monday-Friday 08:30-16:00.

WSA Café

For students studying in Winchester, the WSA Café offers homemade cakes and pastries, alongside traditional sandwiches and a daily menu. The open area, used for many events, also serves filter coffee and bean to cup speciality coffee. Opening times: Monday-Friday 08:30-15:30.
