Southampton rises 22 places in Times Higher Education World Rankings

The University has climbed 22 places in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings to rank 110 in the world. Amongst UK universities in the rankings, Southampton is placed 17 out of 78.

This follows a series of other league table successes for the University.

The rise follows Southampton’s improvement of 14 places last year in the THE rankings and consolidates its position amongst the world’s leading universities.

Southampton’s rank this year reflects its excellent performance in many of the ‘Pillars’ used by the THE to generate its World University Rankings. In particular, the University improved its scores for Teaching, Research and Citations – all of which are heavily weighted by the THE – as well as International Outlook where Southampton’s Pillar rank is 60 in the world.

The THE ranking closes a highly successful year for Southampton in UK and world university rankings. The university recently rose 13 places to rank 81 globally in the QS World University Rankings.

Southampton also scored a hat-trick of improvements in UK-focused university rankings this year after moving up to 14 in both the Complete University Guide and Guardian University Guide. These rankings were followed by the Good University Guide, published recently by The Times and The Sunday Times, where Southampton rose to 16.
