són, a new orchestra set up by Robin Browning from the Music Department, is to have its debut at Turner Sims on 29 November.
The ensemble has been created for the city of Southampton and is called són, meaning ‘sound’ or ‘music’ in old English.
Robin Browning, runs the conducting programme at the University and is now also Artistic Director of són.
He says he feels it’s definitely time to add to the array of classical music on campus and throughout the city:
“I’m convinced that the city, and the south of the UK as a whole is not only ready for something like són, but desperately in need of it. Southampton is the largest city in the country with no professional orchestra until now. són will contribute enormously towards the region’s cultural enrichment.”
The launch concert, Sibelius Unwrapped, features music by the Finnish composer whose 150th Anniversary is celebrated this year.
