The fourth Southampton Blackout – everything you need to know

Every year more than 250 students and members of staff come together to deliver Southampton Blackout, our ground-breaking electricity audit and switch-off event that is now replicated at universities across the country.

This year, Blackout will take place on Friday 13 November.

Blackout is designed to highlight the positive impact of our collective small actions on campus just by switching off equipment, lights and devices at the end of each day. Switching off equipment not only reduces our energy consumption and carbon emissions but cuts our annual electricity bill too.

On the night, teams will audit and switch off any computers, lights and equipment left on unnecessarily before the weekend and then measure the impact on our electricity usage.

How you can support Blackout

1) Switch off – not just on Blackout night, but every night.

2) Opt out – if you know you need to leave your computer or another piece of office equipment on over the weekend, please complete this form and return it by 6 November at the latest. Remember, you no longer need to leave your computer on to work from home.

3) Sign up – The Blackout team still have some spaces for staff who would like to volunteer to help out on the night. Please complete this form if you want to take part. Students, look out for details soon of how you can sign up.

You can follow progress on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Look out for more information about the impact after the event.

Blackout is the part of the University’s 2015 Wellbeing Week, find out more here.
