How to secure a job before you graduate

If you are thinking of leaving university with a graduate job offer then you need to start planning right now.

graduates success

According to The Graduate Market 2015, recruiters expect 31% of this year’s entry-level positions to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations, either through paid internships, industrial placements or vacation work.

Excel Placement Scheme

The Excel Placement Scheme scheme, run by the University, offers paid internship opportunities during vacation periods and at term-time. You can apply via MyCareer. Opportunities are generally advertised at the beginning of each month for a period of three weeks.

Insight schemes & internships

These typically involve a short period of time spent with an employer, trying to get a feel for the work they do. Summer internships, on the other hand, involve a four – 12 week placement with an employer in the summer.

Taking advantage of these opportunities is a great way to make new contacts and impress an employer. Furthermore, they give you a chance to evaluate the type of career you want to pursue.

Here is what Georgia Varti, BSc Marketing, had to say about her placement:

A placement is an exciting and invaluable opportunity to develop both personally and professionally in a corporate environment and I’ve been given a great amount of responsibility. For example, last month I planned, created and executed the entire marketing content for the new M&S baby range that is now being sold in over 50 countries.

Most employers have their own application processes in place, operating on a strict timeline, many of which have already started. Visit their respective websites to find out more about how you can apply and any deadlines you need to meet.
