Blackout: don’t forget to opt out if you want to leave essential equipment on

Staff and students who need to leave essential equipment on during Blackout, on 13 November, are asked to complete this form requesting an ‘opt out’ from the evening.

Blackout is designed to highlight the positive impact of our collective small actions on campus just by switching off computers, lights and devices at the end of each day.

Switching off equipment not only reduces our energy consumption and carbon emissions but cuts our annual electricity bill too.

Blackout covers offices and Common Learning Spaces but excludes lecture theatres and laboratories and ECS computer laboratories.

On the night, teams of staff and students will audit and switch off any equipment left on unnecessarily before the weekend and then measure the impact on our electricity usage.

If you fill in the ‘opt out’ form, you will be sent a poster to display on the piece of equipment that is to be left on.

If you’re worried that switching off your computer means it will take even longer to start, please check with ServiceLine if it normally takes longer than 4 minutes, as there may be something wrong with it.

You can read the Blackout FAQs here.

You can follow progress on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Blackout is part of the University’s 2015 Wellbeing Week, find out more here.
