Completed and planned investments to student study space

The University and Students’ Union are constantly investing in projects to help provide students with the study and social spaces that they require when and where they want them.

Below is a collection of investments made over the last year and some that are planned for the near future. These types of investments are only made possible because of our successful student recruitment over the last few years.

Investments completed over the last academic year (totalling over £5m)

B2-space-openingNew independent learning space in Building 2, Highfield Campus; specifically created for Business, Law and Arts students, but open to all.

Renovation of the Winchester library; including the addition of a new reception and study spaces. This was completed in October.

NOCS Labs 1Creation of four new teaching laboratories for students studying at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. These state-of-the-art teaching laboratories complete with new equipment opened for students this academic year, creating an additional 50 study spaces.

Mayflower Student Learning Centre24hr access Student Learning Centre opened within Mayflower Halls. This new space, whilst minutes away from the rooms of Mayflower residents, is open to all students who sign-in at the Mayflower reception.

Investment in new laboratories and independent learning spaces for Electronics and Computer Science students. These new laboratories opened this academic year for students, adding 70 extra work stations for students.

IMG_2379Developments to the Avenue & Library Learning Commons have extended services for all students studying at our Avenue Campus, after opening this September.

SUSU level 2 spaceStudents’ Union developments to the space on level 2 of Building 42, turning it into a flexible study and social space for students.

The development of the foyer and associated study spaces within building 46, Highfield Campus. This created an extra 80 study spaces for students.

Hartley Library 4Extra investment has allowed the Hartley Library to extend its 24hr opening period this academic year. This is the final year of a three year pilot for the 24hr library. The Academic Skills Hub also opened this year to provide a space within the Hartley Library for students to seek advice on developing their academic skills.

Planned student investments

  • Renovation to the Students’ Union Cinema, planned for Easter 2016 to improve the seating in the venue and input a stage.
  • Decommissioning of some Hartley Library book stock to allow more study spaces to be created.
  • Creation of a new Centre for Learning and Teaching. This is being designed to fulfil the requirement for flexible independent and group study space and, along with lecture theatres and seminar rooms, will include a computer suite and a range of independent learning spaces where students can study individually or in groups.
  • New student area in Building 4, aimed mainly at Law students, but open to all, which aims to be completed next year.
