Getting involved with activities outside of your course is not only a fantastic way to de-stress, but is beneficial for your CV and, most importantly, fun. It’s never too late to start something new, so we’ve compiled a breakdown of what is on offer outside of your lectures and labs.

Societies

Whether your interests lie in competitive sport, academic groups, or or simply being a part of a team  – the Student’s Union has a society to suit everyone. From the Buddhist Meditation Society to Road Cycling, there is a society to cater for even the most niche of interests.

Volunteering

Southampton is home to lots of non-profit charities and associations, who would most certainly appreciate your help. You can find a list of ideas and opportunities for volunteering in our previous SUSSED guide.

Excel Internship Scheme

The scheme offers a vast range of 4-12 week paid work placements exclusively for students at the University, available during both term-time, and over the Easter and summer periods.

Student Ambassadors

Becoming a Student Ambassador is an excellent way to get involved with the University. The position is part-time, and run on a casual basis.

Seek out new skills

The University offers a range of free online courses (MOOCs), which are available to all students. This is a brilliant way of gaining knowledge and experience in subject areas outside of your degree course.

You can also find a range of wider opportunities to develop your skills on the newly launched OPUS website.

Show off your creativity

Here at Southampton, we are lucky to be home to a huge student-led media team. There’s a media outlet to suit almost every interest – be it journalism, broadcasting or even film-making.
