Talking to the gods: new research from Roman Britain Study Day

Staff and students are invited to attend the next Lifelong Learning Study Day, on 21 November at 10:00-16:00, at Avenue Campus, Southampton.

Roman study day

For the people of Britain living under Roman rule, conquest not only brought new gods, but also new forms of buildings to worship them through.
From the monumental remains of the Temple to Sulis at Bath, to the small rural shrines, archaeology has revealed an array of different forms that these buildings took.

In the last ten years, there have been exciting new discoveries about the variability this took, with new temples discovered, and known sites re-excavated.

Advances in techniques have increased the amount of information we can extract from excavation, and so we can now understand how temples fit into their wider landscapes, and the kinds of rituals that people carried out in these spaces.

The workshop presents the results of some of the most significant research, pulling this material together for the very first time.

This Study Day is kindly sponsored by the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies.

A buffet lunch and refreshments will be provided. Discount rates are available.
