The Students’ Union’s is relaunching the Don’t Rush to Rent campaign to improve the standard of housing across the city.

The campaign, which will run throughout the year targeting students, landlords and letting agents, aims to reduce the pressure students face by being rushed into renting a house and to ensure they are aware of their rights as tenants.

Sam Bailey, the Vice-President Welfare, says:

“Students account for around 15% of this city but the accommodation available to them has been sub-standard for too long. No one should have to live with mould, rats or other pests in the 21st century.

“We believe everyone is entitled to safe and healthy housing and that’s why we’re launching this campaign to work with students, landlords and letting agents to improve housing for all.”

You can find more details about this housing campaign on the Students’ Union website, including details from the recent Vent About Your Rent survey

Louise Bellamy, the Students’ Union Housing Officer, says:

“In my time at uni I’ve heard some awful housing stories, and had some bad experiences myself. Something must be done. Our Don’t Rush to Rent campaign is incredibly important as we are aiming to make students more aware of their rights, they shouldn’t rush into signing a contract, and should know what to do if something goes wrong.”

Students encountering housing problems are advised to contact the Students’ Union Advice Centre in person or online as well as contacting Southampton City Council.
