Over 100 students from the University took part in Jailbreak this weekend to raise money for charity. They used their entrepreneurial skills to get as far as they could within 36 hours, without spending any money.
Jailbreak, organised by Student Fundraising committee RAG, alongside student enterprise society Enactus, saw 113 participants divide into 48 teams, which have so far raised £11,843 for charity.
Starting from Highfield Campus and with absolutely no money in their pockets, the winning team – Jamie Dargan, Julie Shannon, and Sevantika Puri – travelled the furthest clocking 9,672km in just 36 hours to reach Hong Kong thanks to a little help from Richard Branson’s office.

“I honestly cannot put into words how happy I am with every single person who took part in Jailbreak this year. Their enthusiasm, determined fundraising, and ability to blag free travel has absolutely blown us away, and has set the bar seriously high for future student Jailbreaks, not only in Southampton, but nationally. “
Morgan Roberts, UK Challenges Officer in RAG, said:
“The (still growing) fundraising total, and the seriously impressive 36,467km covered by our participants in only 36 hours, says more than I could ever sum up verbally, and I hope that they all realise how big a part they have played in the establishment of Jailbreak as a symbol of successful student fundraising at our University.”
The money raised will be split between the Enactus Social Enterprise projects and RAG’s charities for this academic year: Student Minds, the Make-a-Wish foundation and the Red Lipstick Foundation.
