Sir Christopher will be assisted by Nyovani Madise, Professor of Demography and Social Statistics, Co-Director of the Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty and Policy who will take a leading role in addressing E&D issues and initiatives across the University.

Professor Madise will also assist in establishing a new E&D Committee, to be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, aimed at ensuring that the University continues to make good progress in embedding best practice in E&D.

“I’m pleased to be taking a lead role for E&D and it is key to our mission to address these issues directly, consistently and continuously,” said Sir Christopher.

“I would like to thank Dame Jessica for her commitment and contribution as she leaves a legacy of achievement and awareness that we can now build upon going forward.”

Commenting on Sir Christopher’s new role, Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences said:

‘It is fantastic that we have leadership for Equality and Diversity at the highest level of the University with Sir Christopher assuming the role of Champion.

“Together with Professor Nyovani Madise, I know this important agenda will be taken to the next level in the University.  Changing the culture is a big part of this initiative and the new proposed structure will give us the means to make sure this happens.”

And Head of Equality and Diversity, Kamaljit Kerridge-Poona said:

“As a University, we continue to make good progress in E&D. We’ve received two Athena SWAN silver awards for Chemistry and the Faculty of Medicine. We’ve also made very good progress in promoting women to levels 6 and 7.

Sir Christopher’s leadership in this area will now build on these successes and help us to achieve our aim of being a leader in this sector for E&D in the future.”

In early 2016, there will be a special edition of our online staff magazine, Southampton Connects Staff which will focus entirely on Equality and Diversity.
