Winter graduation marks achievements of students and honorary graduates

The University will celebrate the achievements of around 1,000 students during Winter Graduation Ceremonies in the city this week.

The three days of activity from today (Tuesday 15)  to Thursday, 17 December, will be the first in which the University’s new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, will take part since taking up his post in October.

The 10 ceremonies will feature graduating students from a wide range of subjects from chemistry, oceanography, computer science and electronic engineering to nursing, midwifery, web science, music, fashion design and management and public health.

Joining the students are four recipients of honorary awards. Professor Ian Clark, Southampton graduate and Chief Executive Officer of leading US-based biotechnology company Genentech; and Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commercewill both be awarded Honorary Doctorates.

Two other notable Southampton graduates – Professor Nick Bates, Senior Scientist and Director of Research at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Professor Martin Warren, Head of School of Biosciences at the University of Kent – will each receive Higher Doctorates for their contribution to research and learning.

All of this year’s Winter Graduation ceremonies will take place in the Turner Sims Concert Hall on the University’s Highfield Campus.
