With Christmas around the corner, we would like to remind you to switch off your non-essential electrical equipment before you leave for the festive break. This includes computers, monitors, printers and other office equipment that will not be used during the Christmas period.
Many of us were spending a well-earned festive break at home last year, but the University’s academic buildings still consumed around 1,000,000 kWh of electricity. That’s the carbon equivalent of around 1,000 LED lights running continuously for over 14 years, costing an estimated £110,000.
Whilst some of this is essential equipment, all staff can help minimise any non-essential consumption.
As part of ISO14001 certification, the University has set itself a target to reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2020. Help us to achieve this target, and keep energy use and carbon emissions down this Christmas, by switching off your non-essential electrical equipment, making sure all windows are shut tight and lights are switched off when you leave your building.
