The University is advising international students to be wary if they receive a call from someone claiming to be from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) telling them they have failed to complete an ‘Alien Registration Form’ when they entered the UK.
International students in Universities across the UK say they have experienced these types of calls in which the caller states that the students face legal action for failing to declare criminal convictions in their home country.
The caller will then tell students not to discuss the call with anyone else and will phone again to demand a wire transfer of money to settle fines. The number that they call from will appear to be a genuine Home Office telephone number.
This is a well-known scam, the advice is to end the call and block the number.
Please contact the VISAS Team if you receive such a call.
