Your safety and wellbeing is important to the University, and we want to make sure you have a great student experience. Now that we are a few weeks into the second semester year, it is a good time to re-familiarise yourself with some of the things that you can do to make sure you stay safe.
If you’re travelling home from University late at night, please remember to take advantage of the Students’ Union Safety Bus. The bus runs every night from outside the Students’ Union (Building 40 on the Highfield Campus) and will drop you off at your door.
The safety bus costs just £1.50 per journey as long as you live within three miles of campus.
If you live less than five miles from campus, we’ll take you back to your door for £3; and if you’re based in Winchester, even though it’s a long distance, we’ll drive you back to your door for £4.50.
When walking home from campus or from a night out‚ be alert and do not walk alone through isolated areas.
Avoid taking short cuts even if you are late and only use roads that are well-lit and well-travelled – avoiding large, poorly lit areas such as the Common.
Radio Taxi have formulated a mobile phone app, which allows you to request a taxi and pay with either card or PayPal – avoiding the potentially dangerous situation of having to walk due to having run out of cash. You may also request a car with a Chip and Pin facility – this must however be stated upon booking.
The Students’ Union has many safety tips on its website, including a section especially for international students, and publishes and distributes a ‘Student Survival Guide’.
If you need to report anything suspicious to the police, phone 101 (if it’s not an emergency) or phone 999 in an emergency. You can also contact University Security if you’re worried about something on campus: 023 8059 2811.
