Volunteer to take part in this year’s Waste Wars and win a prize

Our tenth annual Waste Wars event takes place on Wednesday 24 February. Each year up to 100 students and staff work together to perform a waste audit on our campuses and calculate our recycling rate.

The data from this audit not only helps to demonstrate our current recycling performance, but is instrumental in identifying which initiatives are required to support improvement. Our current two-bin system, which separates waste into food and mixed recycling, was developed because of the findings of Waste Wars.

There are still spaces available to become a ‘waste warrior’ and take part in this year’s event. Volunteers will work together to identify the types and proportions of waste we produce.

Teams will compete for the prize of shopping vouchers, provided by our new waste contractor SITA, for the team who audit the highest number of bags. Additional prizes up for grabs include hats, mugs and goody bags.

The University’s Waste Management Plan emphasizes the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste and the Facilities department is seeking opportunities to support our staff and students to recycle as much as possible.
