Climate, Colds and Black Holes: Public Lecture in Southampton

An evening of stimulating science talks and friendly discussion will take place at Richard Taunton College on Hill Lane in Southampton on Saturday 12 March.

Black Holes (2)

The ‘Speakezee Presents…’ event, part of a nationwide launch of public lectures and discussions, is being run as part of the University’s Science and Engineering Festival and also the city’s International Women’s Week celebrations.

Three University researchers will engage the audience in their fascinating work and give an insight into the ups and downs of their personal journeys as scientists.

In the light of the recent excitement over gravitational waves, the featured speaker, Professor Marika Taylor, who studied under Professor Stephen Hawking at Cambridge before coming to Southampton, will present the story of black holes: what evidence we have for their existence, how they form, and what they mean for the future of physics.

Tickets are £7.50 (£5 concessions) and include light refreshments. For more information about the event and details of how to book, please go to Eventbrite.

There will be two further free sessions taking place at the Science and Engineering Festival running at 12:00 and 14:00.  Jess Spurrell, PhD student in cryogenic engineering, will showcase some of her favourite female scientists and engineers throughout history. Jess will be followed by three speakers Dr Judith Lock, Adriana Wilde and Dr Mike Head who will answer questions on topics as diverse as evolution, medicine and computer science.
