Enactus students visit Malawi to implement new solar distillation plant

Five members of the University’s student led global enterprise society Enactus, have just returned from a trip to Malawi in order to implement one of their ongoing projects.

The project ‘Juamaji’, which recently won a sustainability award at the University, aims to tackle lack of access to clean water in developing countries.

Enactus is a student-led global social enterprise society. All of its student members volunteer their own time to create, develop and take action on practical entrepreneurial projects, which aim to solve some of the challenges facing the world’s most vulnerable people.

The project currently consists of a solar distillation plant, operating along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, where clean distilled water is freely distributed to a local school. The first full scale model was established following a visit to Kenya in 2015 – where a fish farming enterprise also operates within the ponds beneath the distillation structure.

There are also plans to incorporate a greenhouse element into the current design, and integrate this scheme with other sanitation projects.

Another model was recently established in Malawi, including new designs and plans to expand this further within the country.

With severe health problems and food shortages in the surrounding regions, the Juamaji project aims to help improve the wellbeing of the local population, including the funding of 10 students at a local secondary school.
