University remains top 20 in the Complete University Guide

The University of Southampton has consolidated its position among the UK’s top 20 universities by placing 17 in the latest Complete University Guide, published online today.

Southampton is placed 11 among Russell Group universities in the Guide’s institutional rankings for 2017.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering was ranked third out of 77 universities.

In addition, the Guide places the University in the top 10 in the following subject areas:

Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (5th of 40 listed)

Anthropology (5th of 28)

Architecture (7th of 53)

Aural & Oral Sciences (2nd of 20)

Civil Engineering (6th of 55)

Classics and Ancient History (9th of 25)

Computer Science (6th of 105)

Education (9th of 77)

Electrical and Electronic Engineering (3rd of 77)

French (5th of 13)

German (4th of 42)

Iberian Languages (4th of 50)

Linguistics (9th of 35)

Mechanical Engineering (5th of 68)

Music (10th of 77)

Nursing (9th of 71)

Physiotherapy (10th of 35)

Social Policy (6th of 97)

Once again, Southampton continues a run of featuring in the top 10 for Aeronautical and Manufacturing, Civil, Electrical and Electronic and Mechanical Engineering every year since the Complete University Guide was first published in 2008.

The Southampton subjects showing the greatest improvement this year are:

Anatomy and Physiology (up 16 to 13th)

Medicine (up 12 to 19th)

Business and Management Studies (up 10 to 20th)

French (up 8 to 5th)

Art and Design (up 7 to 13th)

The Complete University Guide – one of three principal UK-based rankings for UK universities – is based on a wide range of criteria including UCAS entry tariffs, student satisfaction, research excellence and intensity, graduate prospects, student-staff ratio, university spending on academic services and facilities, the percentage of first degree graduates achieving a first or upper second class honours degree, and degree completion.
