A team of 15 students from the University of Southampton have completed a two day, 60-mile walk around the Isle of Wight to raise over £2500 for the international development charity Cameroon Catalyst.

Cameroon Catalyst was founded in 2009 by Southampton University students to provide improved infrastructure and facilities to rural villages in Eastern Cameroon.

The charity is currently fundraising to construct 10 new wells for the region, as 50% of rural Cameroonians lack access to safe drinking water.

The walk aimed to reflect the difficulties involved in collecting water faced by millions of people each day. In many parts of Africa, girls can spend as many as six hours a day collecting water, often having to walk many miles to the source.

One of the team members Megan Martin, a first year Civil Engineering Student, said:

“The walk was very tiring, but it has been amazing to raise so much knowing the impact it will have for communities in Cameroon.”

If you would like to support the effort of these students, you can donate online through their Justgiving page.  You can also get involved in any future walks or fundraising activities by contacting the society president, Mikey Harper.
