A Year in Employment: Who is eligible?

The Year in Employment is a new placement programme being launched for eligible undergraduate students. The Careers & Employability service has compiled a 5 part series entitled ‘A Year in Employment’, which will outline and answer any questions that you may have regarding the programme.

The Year in Employment is open across the University for eligible students. These are undergraduate students on most courses without a placement or study abroad opportunity. For example, a BSc Geography student can take part in the Year in Employment but Modern Languages students who are required to undergo a Year Abroad are unable to participate.

Medicine and Health Science students cannot take part as they have alternative placement opportunities.  All other faculties have eligible courses although in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, only Environmental Science students can participate, and in FPSE, only Physics students are eligible.

In the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, Environmental Science students can participate, and in FPSE, Physics students are eligible. Other options are available in those two Faculties for students on different programmes.

Please find our list of eligible courses on our webpage.

If you are on an eligible course and would like to go out on placement, you would do so after your second year semester 2 exams.

Students on a Tier 4 visa on eligible courses can undertake the Year in Employment but they will be required to return to their home country to apply for a new visa. If you are interested, we recommend you speak with the Visa and Immigration Student Advice Service to confirm additional requirements in your first year.

If you’ve any questions on eligibility, please contact us at [email protected] or call (0)23 8059 3501.
