The Year in Employment is a new placement programme being launched for eligible undergraduate students.
Money is an important factor to consider with most decisions. Whilst we believe the experience from a placement year is a fantastic opportunity, we also recommend that you consider the financial implications of the Year in Employment.
In undertaking the Year in Employment, you remain enrolled as a student with a reduced tuition fee of 20% your normal annual tuition fee.
This covers the additional preparation, support and assessment of your placement by the University and enables you to access resources such as the library and enabling services, your University email and the Students’ Union.
If you have been entitled to student finance, you will be able to borrow the full amount for the tuition fees and you can also apply for a reduced maintenance loan. For more details, see our website.
Students on Tier 4 visas will face additional costs due to UKVI requirements and are advised to speak to the Visa and Immigration Student Advice Service before considering.
We recommend that students apply for paid placements. Salaries usually range between £14,000- £17,000 per year but they do differ depending on sector and location.
Students can complete unpaid placements but we need to undergo a thorough duty of care process with those considering doing so. Do let us know as soon as possible if you’re considering an unpaid placement.
There may be additional costs like:
- Expenditure to obtain professional and appropriate work attire
- Costs involved in securing accommodation, and higher costs of living in some locations
- You may incur commuting expenses to and from your workplace
We’d be more than happy to answer your finance-related question and you can get in touch at [email protected] or at (0)23 8059 3501.
