Scientists from the University’s Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG) have worked together with Sixth-form textile students from Peter Symonds College on the ‘Changing Minds’ project, to help break down the stigmas surrounding mental health through encouraging thought and conversation on the subject.
With the aid of Beki Vaile, textiles teacher at Peter Symonds, Dr Shmma Quraishe, Dr Joanne Bailey and Professor Lindy Holden-Dye from SoNG helped students to understand the various molecular and morphological changes which occur in the brains of those affected by neurological conditions.
Whilst considering the science behind the conditions, students took to various mediums of art including paint, manipulation of garments and sculpture, to help interpret and represent the different diseases.
To celebrate the student’s thought-provoking art works, there will be a free, private exhibition of the pieces on Thursday 26 May 2016, 17:00 – 18:30 in the Textiles Studio at Peter Symonds College, Winchester.
