A major project to improve the care of the Hartley Library’s Special Collections will begin on Monday, 6 June.

Staff and students should be aware that between Thursday, 16 June and Friday, 5 August, there will be reduced ventilation in some sections of the library, which may result in less suitable study conditions.

Library staff will be available to assist you in finding alternative study space during this time. More information on alternative spaces can be found here, or alternatively, you can contact the library directly.

The project will include replacing sections of the library roof, as well as the air handling plant that controls ventilation in Special Collections and adjacent areas of the library, resulting in better storage conditions.

An overview of key dates is provided below:

Monday, 6 June: works commence including the installation of scaffolding. Localised footpath closures may be required and will be clearly marked.

Monday, 20 June: crane used to remove the existing ventilation units from the library roof. The road between Building 5 and Hartley Library will be closed to allow crane access, and diversions will be clearly signposted.

Monday, 25 July: crane used to lift new ventilation units on to the library roof. A further road closure between Building 5 and Hartley Library will be required to allow crane access, and diversions will be clearly signposted.

Week commencing Monday, 8 August: scaffolding will be removed.

Additionally, between June and September the Archives, Manuscripts and Rare Books reading room in Special Collections will be running a restricted service: this might include brief periods of closure. For further information about access, please contact Archives and Manuscripts.

Works will be completed by Christmas 2016.
