Guidance for staff regarding the proposed UCU strike

UCU has informed the University of its intention for members to take strike action on Tuesday, 5 July. This action will affect university campuses across the UK and follows a ballot in respect of the 2016 pay award.

The University respects the right of a UCU member to take such action, however, it is hoped that support for our students will be a major consideration at all times. As such‚ senior managers are asking staff who intend to strike to kindly make them aware of this in advance in order that alternative arrangements for student or external facing activities can be made as required.

The University’s policy on withholding pay in such circumstances is set out here. As a goodwill gesture, the University will continue to fund USS contributions during strike action to ensure there is no risk of a break in pensionable service for individuals involved in the action.

The University is committed to protecting the experience of our students and will endeavour to maintain the excellent education that we normally provide throughout the strike.

NUT strike action

Also on Tuesday, 5 July, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced strike action following a national ballot which could affect children and parents/guardians where schools may be closed or partially closed.

We recognise this action may impact on many of our staff. If you are affected, we encourage you to discuss the impact and possible options with your line manager. Where possible, please take all reasonable efforts to come to work as normal.
