The event will focus on adolescent, preconception and maternal health, an area in which the University is conducting pioneering research and outreach, including the novel educational facility LifeLab. An initiative which gives school children the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of biomedical research with a view to improving their attitude towards health, LifeLab aims to motivate them to adopt healthy behaviours and provide valuable insights into the challenges of linking education and health policy.

The lecture will include keynotes from:

  • Professor Neena Modi, Professor of Neonatal Medicine at Imperial College London, Consultant at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, and President of the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
  • Professor Mark Hanson, Director of the Institute of Developmental Sciences at the University of Southampton.
  • Dr Howard Taylor, Managing Director of Girl Effect and University of Southampton alumnus.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion on the future of adolescent and preconception health. Professor Cyrus Cooper, Professor of Rheumatology and Director of the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, will be chairing the discussion.

Also joining our keynote speakers will be Professor Nyovani Madise, Professor of Demography and Social Statistics, Co-Director of the Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty and Policy.

A live stream of the adolescent and preconception health lecture from the Wellcome Collection, London, will be available on the University website from 17:15 today (Wednesday, 6 July).
