Major upgrade work will be performed on the University’s core network during the approved outage window on Saturday 30 July and Sunday 31 July 2016.
The University network will be taken down on the afternoon of Saturday 30 July for 4 hours. When service is restored, the network should be considered at risk until 07:00 Monday 1 August.
Dates
- Saturday 30 July – full network outage between approximately 14:00 – 18:00 (remaining at risk after 18:00).
- Sunday 31 July – network at risk all day.
Outage Impact
- The majority of buildings will be closed for the duration of the outage (except Halls of Residence, Hartley Library, University Sports facilities including the Jubilee Sports centre, Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital). Staff and students are requested to not enter University buildings unless vital, and that Building Managers processes are followed if this is required.
- All services that depend on the network including web services will not work for the duration of the outage. Please note: during the outage the external facing University website will also be unavailable.
- Computers, telephones and printers will experience a loss of connection. They should re-connect automatically, if not a re-boot will restore the connection.
At risk impact
- The network and all services should work as usual, but complex work will be underway and there may be occasional short network disruption.
What’s happening and why
These upgrades are part of the Network Architecture Programme that is delivering:
- New Fibre Optic network
- A very high capacity core network
- Enhanced wireless network
- Faster and more resilient Network connectivity to University sites
