Welcoming our students to Southampton

In February, the Welcome Project officially came to an end. After four years, the project has made huge changes to the experience of students when they arrive at the University.

With Welcome Week 2016 fast approaching, this is an opportunity to celebrate the success of The Welcome Project and outline how work will proceed going forward.

The Welcome Project was created to improve the Welcome experience for new students. Over four years, the Project has:

  • Produced clear, consistent and co-ordinated communications to students, from application to arrival.
  • Improved the general experience of Welcome Week.
  • Created an induction experience that is inclusive of all students joining the University.
  • Streamlined registration processes.

The project was recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for the positive impact it had on transition and induction. The project was also praised for having a coordinated, cross-University approach.

To ensure students can benefit from this work for many years to come, the following steps will be taken:

  • Operations Support within Student Services will take overall accountability for the University’s Welcome, ensuring that we can continue to deliver our Welcome to a high standard.
  • Communications will be widely distributed to staff across the University.
  • Quality measures will be agreed upon and monitored to ensure a continuation of the spirit and legacy of the Welcome Project.
  • Opportunities will be developed for business owners across the University to continue to collaborate, with the aim of delivering an increasingly high quality experience.

Everyone who has engaged with the project has had a huge impact on student experience, thank you. Participants across the University showed a clear passion for improving the experience of our students, and the success of the project was down to their efforts.

Nicola Adcock, Operations Support Lead will be able to help and support with any day-to-day questions about Welcome processes, and you can contact her by emailing: [email protected]
