University maintains international standard for environmental management

Our collective efforts over the last year have helped to ensure that we continue to operate at an international standard for managing our environmental impact.

External auditors visited the University at the end of July to review our operations, and they have confirmed that we have maintained our system to the level required of ISO 14001.

The environmental management system that we use on our campuses is important, as it helps to ensure that we manage our impact and comply with all relevant legislation.

The focus now shifts to improvements that will help the University achieve an updated standard in 2017.

Lucy Potashnick, the Environment and Sustainability Manager, said:

“Our continued certification is a reflection of the work by all our staff and students to manage our environmental impacts. A requirement of the standard is that we continually improve. Targeting the new standard in 2017 will help us focus on key areas where we can develop.”

You can help us to reduce our environmental impacts by making sure unnecessary equipment is switched off, you put your waste in the correct recycling bin and chemicals are stored and disposed of appropriately.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management. The University was awarded certification in July 2014.

In 2017 the University will undergo a re-certification to the updated ISO 14001 environmental management system standard – ISO 14001:2015.

Research colleagues may find that they can include the certification on grant applications, to make them even more competitive.
