The 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University was published recently and, once again, the University has performed well.
The 2016 results show that for the third consecutive year, Southampton is ranked in the top 150 of universities overall.
The University is included in a group of institutions ranked ‘100-150’ so has not received a specific numerical ranking, however the position has strengthened since last year and now shows as being only just outside the top 100.
Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also included.
The two leading world university rankings are due for publication in September. The QS World Rankings are scheduled for publication in mid-September followed slightly later by the Times Higher Education world rankings.
