Further details on the Union Southampton’s new minibus fleet

We recently reported on the Union Southampton’s new fleet of minibuses purchased for student use and welfare. The post generated some interesting feedback and, in keeping with the University’s desire for transparency, we would like to provide some additional information on the investment.

  • The five new minibuses are a direct replacement for the older, much less economical fleet. With a greatly reduced CO2 output they help underpin the University’s core principle of sustainability.
  • The older fleet had gathered an impressive number of combined miles and were beginning to age, increasing the frequency of required maintenance and reducing overall reliability.
  • The new minibuses will have a positive impact on the overall student/societal experience at Southampton.
  • Student safety and wellbeing are of vital importance, the Union will continue to subsidise the popular Safety Bus scheme and are proud to have been able to maintain the £1.50 charge for the service to students.
  • The new fleet incorporates features which are more student and driver friendly, including reverse audible warning alarms, parking sensors on the front, rear and side, roof racks with ladder access to satisfy the needs of a larger variety of groups and societies, and consistent disability access across all of the vehicles.
  • Like the previous fleet, the new minibuses are on a lease.
