On Saturday 30 July and Sunday 31 July, major upgrade work on the University’s core network was successfully completed. The work will enable iSolutions to complete further planned enhancements, continuously improving the services that underpin the strategic objectives of the University.
The upgrade work was part of the Network Architecture (NA) Programme which is delivering significant improvements to the staff and student experience:
New Fibre Optic network:
- Links buildings to the core via over 30km of high-speed fibre on Highfield alone
A very high capacity core network:
- All building connections are 10gb and are connected to two core locations ensuring maximum system availability
Enhanced wireless network:
- Faster and far greater campus coverage with extended Eduroam services
Our other campus sites:
- Faster and more resilient network connectivity
This is an opportunity to celebrate the success of the NA Core Project with zero services having been impacted as a result of the upgrade.
Professor Simon Cox, Chief Information Officer said of the work:
“This was an incredibly complex piece of work, completed in a very tight timeframe. No services were interrupted as a result of the work which is testament to the dedication and professionalism of the iSolutions team. Many thanks to all involved.”
The final element of this project, linking the new fibre optic connections to the core network, will commence in the coming months. The wider Network Architecture Programme represents a significant multi-million pound investment that will deliver a high speed network capable of supporting our future IT requirements, improving resilience, increasing security, improving performance and supporting the ever increasing number of attached devices.
iSolutions would like to thank the project team, strategic partners, key stakeholders and everyone involved for their cooperation, professionalism and support, working as one collective team to make this a success story and a positive journey for the University.
