The University has maintained its ranking in the top 90 institutions in the world according to the 2016 QS World University Rankings published today (Tuesday, 6 September).
Southampton is placed 87 out of 916 universities ranked and thousands more assessed over the last 12 months by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). Amongst the 73 UK universities to make this year’s table, Southampton is ranked 17.
The QS rankings are based on a range of indicators that focus on excellence in teaching and research, the reputation of universities amongst employers and fellow academics, and the international mix of students and staff. Over 70,000 academics and 40,000 employers contributed their views to inform and shape the rankings, with over 11 million research papers and 40 million citations also reviewed and analysed.
“Amongst the main principles of the University’s strategy are quality and internationalisation,” said Southampton Vice-Chancellor and President, Sir Christopher Snowden. “Against this backdrop, it is encouraging to see our University maintain its position in the top 100 overall as evidence of our reputation and status as a globally-focused institution.”
QS also publishes Faculty Area Rankings focusing on five broad areas of study as well as Rankings by Subject featuring results across 42 specific subject areas. Both of these rankings are due for publication in the spring of 2017.
The next major world rankings are due for publication by Times Higher Education later this month.
