PhD student Nazira, from the Faculty of Medicine, beat five other competitors to take the 3MT National Champion title at the Vitae Researcher Development International Conference.

Before the finals, SUSSED asked Nazira a few questions:

  • How do you feel being in the final?

“I am very excited about representing the University in the national finals and I hope I do it justice.”

  • Why do you feel it’s important to develop your communication skills in this way?

“It’s important to be able to communicate your research to members of the public and to be able to clearly and concisely increase their awareness of the research that’s taking place. People should know about the efforts that are being taken to cure diseases which may have directly affected them, members of their family or their friends. As a substantial amount of funding comes from the public, it is our duty to keep them informed about what we are doing.”

  • It’s a great gift to be able to translate and communicate your research but what do you hope that people take away from your presentation?

“I hope that members of the public are informed of the research taking place in Prof. Roxana Carare’s lab in search of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.”

First developed by the University of Queensland, the Three Minute Thesis competition is now a global initiative with more than 350 universities taking part.
