He was Head of the School of Humanities from its establishment in 2004 – 2009, and has also served as head of Modern Languages and as Director of the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies.
Professor Kelly’s contribution has been exceptional, through his scholarship, educational work and external engagement. In addition, he has a formidable international reputation, having served on the Board of the European Language Council since 1997.
Professor Kelly has published widely on modern French intellectual culture and language policy: his work has been recognised in France with the prestigious awards of ‘Chevalier dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres’ and ‘Officier dans l’ordre des palmes académiques’. His contribution to the place of Modern Languages in Higher Education has been central to UK policy-making, and was recognised in 2010 with an Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and in 2014 with the award of an OBE.
