Title: ‘What can we learn about our warming future from the climate of the past?’

Since the industrial revolution over 150 years ago, humanity has emitted nearly 600gt of carbon dioxide (CO2) – a potent greenhouse gas. As a consequence, the average temperature of the Earth has increased by around 1oC and the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by >40 per cent, recently exceeding 400 ppm (parts per million).

How hot our future will be depends on two factors: (i) how much CO2 humanity will emit in years to come, and (ii) how sensitive the Earth’s climate system is to changes in the strength of the greenhouse effect.

Date: 22 September 2016.

Time: 17:30.

Venue: Henry Charnock Lecture Theatre, NOCS Waterfront Campus European Way, SO14 3ZH.
