University professor appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire

Professor Cyrus Cooper has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire.

Professor Cooper, who is Director of the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University, will take up the position immediately and support the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out his functions as HM The Queen’s representative in the county.

He will continue his role at the University, which includes leading an internationally competitive programme of research into the epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders, most notably osteoporosis.

Professor Cooper, who was awarded an OBE for services to medical research in 2015, said:

“I am thrilled to take up this prestigious role alongside my University projects. It is a tremendous honour to become Deputy Lieutenant and I look forward to carrying out my duties with the dedication and professionalism they deserve.”

Professor Cooper will hold the appointment until he is 75 years old.

Duties of the Lord-Lieutenant include:

1. The arrangement of Royal visits to the county and the escort of Royal visitors as appropriate.
2. Participation in civic and social activity including encouragement of a wide range of voluntary activities.
3. Liaison with local units of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.
4. Presentation of medals and awards on behalf of HM The Queen.
5. Responsibility for greeting Heads of State and submitting names for Royal garden parties.
