The Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WiSET) group invite staff and students to the unveiling of a special collage at Hartley Library (foyer area) at 13:15 on Tuesday 11 October 2016, created to celebrate the achievements and success of women across the University and to commemorate Ada Lovelace Day.
Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was a mathematician and writer, and a Victorian pioneer of the computer age. Widely respected for her visionary work, she is often regarded as the World’s first computer programmer. Founded in 2009 and held annually, Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration day of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and maths (STEMM).
To promote this special day and increase the profile of women across the University, the WiSET group spent the summer collecting selfie photos of our female academic and research colleagues across all faculties to create a mosaic collage of Ishbel Campbell (1906-1997).
Ishbel was one of the founding academics of the University of Southampton, a reader in Chemistry as well as a committed teacher and inspiration for women in science (more information about Ishbel can be found here). The collage will be a proud showcase of all our female colleagues across the different faculties, and a reminder of the amazing work they do. Attendees will be provided with tea, coffee and cake.
There will be a separate independent coffee and cake celebration for Ada Lovelace day taking place at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) at 14:30 on 11 October in node room 074/02.
No registration is required, so if you are interested in attending either celebration, please feel free to turn up on the day.
