Jane Falkingham joined a panel of experts from research, policy and civil society at the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday 3 October for a debate on some of the issues about ageing in Europe.
Professor Falkingham is Director of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Centre for Population Change and Dean of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences. She spoke about how we measure old age and its changing meaning, as well as discussing the importance of life course-sensitive social policy.
The event also launched the opening of the CPC and Population Europe exhibition ‘How to get to 100 and enjoy it.’ at the European Parliament. The exhibition, which previously toured the UK, is aimed at encouraging people to think about the challenges posted by an ageing population and how this will affect their lives – especially with one in three children born in Europe today expected to live to 100 years of age.
Population experts from the ESRC Centre for Population Change, based at the University, created content for the exhibition in conjunction with Population Europe. An App is now available to access the content digitally.
