Many of you will have noticed that the pond by the staff social centre, which contains the sculpture ‘Puy de Dôme Figure’ by F E McWilliam, is currently being given a major overhaul.
Often referred to on campus as the “reclining figure pond”, it is being cleaned and refurbished, and fitted out with new pumps and filter systems as well as fresh plants. The fish have all been safely relocated and no fish will be reintroduced to the pond after this renovation, as there will be a lack of natural cover, making them easy prey for predators.
Those with ponds at home will not be surprised to hear that on emptying it of water, it was found to have over a foot of sludge at the bottom. The pond will now be subject to more regular cleaning to prevent build-up of sludge in the future. Campus users are asked to take care in the area of the pond while work continues.
Other ponds within the courtyards of Building 38 are planned to be similarly renovated over the coming months.
