British Art Show 8

Organised by Hayward Touring every five years, the British Art Show is a touring exhibition that provides a vital overview of the most significant contemporary art in the UK. After visiting Leeds, Edinburgh and Norwich, British Art Show 8 has finally reached Southampton – the final city on its nationwide tour.

British Art Show 8 is presented in Southampton across three venues; John Hansard Gallery at the University’s Highfield Campus; Southampton City Art Gallery; and Bargate Monument, a Grade I listed medieval gatehouse in the city centre.

For British Art Show 8, curators Anna Colin and Lydia Yee have selected the work of 42 artists who have made a notable contribution to contemporary art in the UK over the past five years, with 26 of the artists producing new works for the exhibition, making this the most ambitious British Art Show to date. Work is explored through a variety of mediums – performance, film, sculpture, installation, painting and design – introducing an audience to a new generation of artists and work.

The exhibition opens on Sunday 9 October and runs until 15 January 2017, alongside a packed public events programme. All venues are open daily from Monday – Sunday, 10:00 – 17:00, giving visitors every opportunity to make the most of this incredible feast of art!
