són – Southampton’s new professional orchestra – launch their autumn season at Turner Sims on Saturday 22 October at 19:30 with ‘8 Seasons’, featuring charismatic violinist Daniel Rowland.
Combining Vivaldi’s ever-popular 4 Seasons with Piazzolla’s tango-inspired ‘4 Seasons of Buenos Aires’, són weave an intoxicating mix of sounds and colours from Italy and Argentina, after opening with a movement of Bachianas Brasileiras by Brazilian master Villa Lobos.
Launched last year by Robin Browning, conducting teacher in the University music department, són boast some of the country’s top orchestral players amongst their ranks, including University staff and alumni. Additionally, they offer opportunities to a number of current students through their masterclass scheme, an inspiring orchestral training programme, and internships for those interested in pursuing careers in arts marketing, media, and administration.
The concert begins the orchestra’s second season, following three consistent sell-outs last year, including their ‘Unwrapped’ series with John Suchet and David Owen Norris, and their first family concert with artist and presenter James Mayhew, who live-painted on stage as the full orchestra performed music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In addition to ‘8 Seasons’, són will perform Max Richter’s 4 Seasons Recomposed in Turner Sims on 28 April 2017, and debut at Romsey Abbey on 18 March 2017.
Tickets for ‘8 Seasons’ range in price from £12 – £24.
