Four new scholars from Xiamen University, China, recently arrived to start PhD programmes in Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) and Modern Languages. They were awarded scholarships through the Xiamen-Southampton PhD scholarship scheme, which was established in 2015 to train up to 40 PhD students.
A number of awards are offered each year, supported by additional funding from the Chinese Scholarship Council. Candidates are selected jointly by both universities following their Bachelor studies at Xiamen.
The students were welcomed by Professor James Vickers, Director of the Doctoral College, and Alison Tebbutt, International Scholarships Officer.
Professor Vickers commented:
“We are delighted to receive an increasing number of highly qualified scholars from Xiamen University to pursue their PhD training at Southampton under our joint scholarship programme. We look forward to following their progress and strengthening our academic collaboration with Xiamen in future years.”
Xiamen University is a key strategic partner, with whom the University has established numerous links in education and research across a wide range of subject areas. Following a successful Southampton Day held in Xiamen, the President of Xiamen University and a delegation of senior staff will visit Southampton for Xiamen Day on 16 and 17 November.
