The city of Southampton will be hosting a series of events throughout October to celebrate Black History Month, everyone is invited to get involved.

For the year ahead, we wish to explore equality issues beyond gender, and this project will play a key part in starting that conversation.

Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor and the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Champion, said:

This event is an opportunity for us to celebrate the rich diversity of our staff and students at the University. Black History Month allows us to open up a dialogue about race, culture, and diversity both in the UK and globally.”

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering said:

Whilst there is general awareness of the need for racial diversity to enrich the UK HE sector, there is still much to do to realise this aim in reality. This event provides a real opportunity to reflect on the diversity of our own staff and students and to recognise the contribution this makes directly to our University environment.”
