The ‘Xiamen University Day’ on Wednesday 16 November will offer an opportunity for students, staff and the wider Southampton community to learn about this key partnership and to strengthen ties between the two institutions. The Southampton-Xiamen relationship is particularly important because of the links with our Confucius Institute, which has become a channel for local people to study Chinese language and culture.
At 16:00 on Wednesday 16 November, the University will be awarding an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science, honoris causa) to Professor Zhu Chongshi, President of Xiamen University. President Zhu will receive his degree at a unique ceremony at Highfield Campus.
Following the ceremony, there will be a special performance by the Xiamen University Student Art Troupe, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and jointly organized with the University.
The performance programme will highlight elements of traditional Chinese culture, especially traditional music instruments, folk songs and dances, and also include selections from well-known western operas and musicals, such as Cats. The show aims to dazzle audiences with a unique cross-cultural performance.
The Art Troupe of Xiamen University consists of 17 performers, including seven faculty members and 10 students from different colleges and schools at Xiamen University. Most of them are prize winners in various national and international competitions.
