Turner Sims Southampton will host the English premiere of a new documentary this Friday evening, 4 November that offers an intimate journey across the island of Madagascar and into parts of Europe through the eyes and experiences of a group of musicians of Madagascan origin.
Songs for Madagascar is directed by the award-winning Cesar Paes and closely follows the creative work of the artists, discovering their transcultural capital and showing first-hand their social, cultural and environmental commitment to one of the most endangered islands in the world.
The film is informed by the research of Southampton Professor of Modern Languages Ulrike Meinhof who has devoted the last decade to focusing on the positive aspects and impacts of migration, particularly the many ways in which people who move between countries can become a cultural asset to both. Professor Meinhof has worked closely with the musicians who feature in the film, bringing them to Southampton in 2009 and in 2012 for performances hosted by the Turner Sims.
Friday’s screening starts at 19:30 and serves as the opening event of this year’s Southampton Film Week. The screening will be followed on the night by a Q&A with Cesar Paes, his producer on the film and partner Marie-Clemence Paes and Professor Meinhof.
On Saturday 5 November, Turner Sims will also host a Director’s and Producer’s Masterclass from 10:30 with Cesar and Marie-Clemence Paes who share secrets of their award-winning projects and offer advice and guidance to young documentary filmmakers who are invited to present extracts of their work.
Tickets for the screening of Songs for Madagascar are £10; £5 for students and under 18s. Tickets for the Documentary Film Workshop are £5; £3 for students and under 18s. Combined tickets for both the screening and Documentary Film Workshop are £12, £6 for students and under 18s.
