Southampton graduate Giles Scott is vying for one further honour to cap a highly successful year.
Scott, the 2016 world champion and Olympic gold medallist in the Finn sailing class in Rio, is a finalist for the Rolex World Sailor of the Year.
This year’s male and female category winners of the Rolex awards will be announced on Tuesday, 8 November but members of the public can cast their vote for Giles by visiting the World Sailing website. Also in contention are Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark, the British pair took gold at Rio 2016 in the 470 Class. Voting is open for 72 hours from 12.00 noon on Friday 4 November.
University alumnus Scott graduated in 2008 with a degree in Geography and Geology, has continued a tradition of British dominance in the Finn sailing class, following in the footsteps of Sir Ben Ainslie (gold in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012) and Iain Percy (gold in Sydney 2000).
Scott will also follow Ainslie should he win the Rolex award. He would also emulate Southampton student and fellow Olympic sailor Lily Xu who claimed the prize in 2012 following her Olympic gold-medal winning performance in London 2012.
